Fly Fishing Instructional Videos

Fly Fishing Videos

Over the course of many years working for RIO Products and Far Bank, Simon has filmed and created many fantastic instructional fly fishing and fly casting videos, with a number of long running video series in particular: the "Far Bank Fly Fishing School", RIO's "How To Fly Fish", RIO' "Fly Fishing Knots", and RIO's "Fly Fishing Tips". Below is a sample of each series, and links to the relevant library if you would like to see more.

Far Bank Fly Fishing School Video Series

This video may be the most useful fly casting film you will ever watch as it delves into the highly efficient fly casting technique called the double haul. The double haul is much more than a style of fly casting; it increases line speed dramatically, which gives the caster much more distance, better control and penetration in the wind, and results in a lot less  fatigue after a day casting on the water.

Usually considered difficult to learn, this episode breaks the components down into simple step-by-step sections that make it easy and fast to learn. As you will see, learning to double haul the "army way" will soon have you making longer casts than you ever have before.

RIO's "How To" Video Series

In this film Simon Gawesworth teaches, demonstrates and explains "How To Perfect A Forward Cast", discusses what to look for in a good forward cast, and shows the three commonest casting mistakes people tend to make. The film is an excellent instructional tool for improving the forward cast, and explains how to easily recognize what is going wrong by watching the loop on the forward cast.

RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers

RIO's Fly Fishing Tips Video Series

The dreaded wind knot - a problem every fly angler encounters. Despite the name, these knots are rarely caused by actual wind, but by a casting error.  In this video Simon demonstrates how wind knots are created, and shows the importance of a smooth forward casting stroke for eliminating the bane of wind knots from your day on the water.  RIO's Fly Fishing Tips series are short, less-than-a-minute videos, each bought to you by a RIO employee or ambassador and showing a single fly fishing tip to help you become a better fly fisher. The series includes freshwater, saltwater and Spey topics, and a mix of casting, fishing and gear tips - some basic, some technical, and everything in between

RIO's Fly Fishing Knots Video Series

This film shows how to tie the Non Slip Loop knot; a fantastic knot for tying larger flies on to a leader or tippet, and one that ensures the fly fishes perfectly all the time. Easy to see, and with clear directions and some top tips, this is one of the best knot films out there.

In addition, this film finishes with a laboratory test that breaks the knot under a controlled environment - illustrating the relative knot strength.

The knot tested in this film was tied in a piece of 10lb RIO Steelhead/Salmon tippet material.
